Sclerotherapy

Overview

Sclerotherapy effectively treats varicose and spider veins.
It is generally considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins.

Varicose vein treatment

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to re-route through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is absorbed by the local tissue and eventually disappears.

Eliminates varicose veins

After sclerotherapy, the treated veins tend to disappear within a few weeks; however, it can sometimes take a month or more to see the final result. In some cases, multiple sclerotherapy treatments are necessary.

Why is it done?

Sclerotherapy is often performed for cosmetic purposes, to improve the appearance of varicose and spider veins. The procedure can also improve related symptoms such as:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Ardor
  • Night cramps

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, doctors recommend that you wait to undergo sclerotherapy.
